The "Beijing Guardian Art Center", located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Wusiji Street and Wangfujing Street, is a typical example of the use of natural granite in the podium building to realize the architect's special design concept. The project is developed by "Beijing Huangdu Real Estate Development Co., Ltd.", invested by "Taikang Home (Beijing) Investment Co., Ltd.", and designed by famous German architect in cooperation with Beijing Architectural Design and Research Institute. The project is located in the downtown area of Beijing; the building height is limited and has high requirements, and considering the actual use function of the project, no matter its architectural design, structural design, or modern curtain wall design and engineering construction, it will face many difficulties and high difficulty challenges.
The building is located in the heart of Beijing, across from art galleries and a historic hutong district. In front of it, it is the headquarters of the CCTV Tower designed by SOHO and OMA, which will be the new headquarters of China's oldest art auction house, the Guardian Art Center, located near Beijing's Forbidden City. The building is embedded in the historical context of central Beijing. The pixelated volume of the lower part of the building blends in texture, color and complex scale with the hutong fabric of the surrounding city. The upper part of the curtain wall building responds to the modern city of Beijing through large scale glass tiles, which resonate with the hutong and courtyard of the neighboring city. Compared with the imperial Forbidden City, the bricks seem more universal, more representative of civil society and its values, a humble, non-elitist view of Chinese culture. The lower facade of the building is made up of pixelated patterns like gray stones, and thousands of perforations and curtain wall panel are used to reflect the most important landscape painting in Chinese history, "The Dwelling of Fuchun Mountain".
According to the architect's design concept of external wall, the external wall adopts "blue brick" style of brick and stone "pixels" placed at the bottom of the building. With the famous landscape painting "Dwelling in Fuchun Mountains" by Huang Gongwang of Yuan Dynasty as the template, thousands of round hole pixels extracted by refinement are embedded into the wall to create abstract landscape outline. To realize the design concept of the above architects, the design and construction of the external curtain wall will face great challenges. The design and construction of the curtain wall of this small building will subvert the traditional concept of curtain wall design and construction.
